Who Is Clear Aligner Treatment Right For?

Clear aligner treatment has become the fastest-growing orthodontic method of the past decade. The idea of aligning teeth without metal braces, in a way that is nearly invisible, appeals to many people. But are clear aligners really suitable for everyone?

How Does a Clear Aligner System Work?

Clear aligners are transparent thermoplastic appliances changed every two to three weeks. Each set of aligners moves the teeth in small steps towards the defined target. Digital planning software predicts in 3D how treatment will progress. They need to be worn approximately 20–22 hours per day and are removed only for eating and brushing.

Who Can Be a Candidate?

Clear aligner treatment produces the best results in:

  • Mild to moderate crowding and spacing issues
  • Overbite or underbite problems up to moderate severity
  • Those who have had previous orthodontic treatment and need minimal correction (retainer failure)
  • Adults and university students for whom aesthetics is a priority

In cases such as complex crossbites, significant skeletal discrepancies or vertical dimension problems, clear aligners alone may be insufficient; a combination with conventional appliances or surgery may be required.

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages: Aesthetic appearance, removability (freedom of diet), easier oral hygiene, no metal irritation, fewer emergency appointments.

Limitations: If not worn enough, treatment extends. Effect is limited in very complex cases. The cost of replacement aligners in case of loss or damage can add up. In younger patients, discipline is very important.

How Does the Treatment Process Work?

The first step is an intraoral scan (digital impression) and 3D simulation. At our clinic, you can review every stage of your treatment together before it begins, using ClinCheck or a similar digital planning platform. Once the aligners have been manufactured, check-up appointments are scheduled at set intervals. Treatment duration can range from a few months to two years depending on the case.

Clear Aligners or Braces?

There is no single correct answer to this question. What matters are the case-specific needs, the person’s lifestyle and treatment compliance. At our clinic we offer both options and guide you to the most suitable plan. Through an assessment appointment we can discover together which option is ideal for you.
