What Is Myofunctional Orthodontics?

Myofunctional orthodontics is an approach that identifies and corrects dysfunction in the oral-facial muscles affecting dental and jaw health. Habits such as mouth breathing, thumb-sucking, swallowing dysfunction or incorrect tongue posture can lead to improper development of the jaws and facial skeleton.

Why Does It Matter?

Orthodontic corrections made with mechanical appliances alone (braces, aligners) may relapse over time if the underlying muscle dysfunction is not resolved. The myofunctional approach eliminates this cause, making treatment more lasting.

How Does Treatment Work?

Breathing exercises, tongue posture training and specialised appliances are used together. Our goal is not only beautiful teeth but a healthy airway and balanced jaw function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is myofunctional orthodontics important?
Habits such as mouth breathing, swallowing disorders and incorrect tongue posture negatively affect jaw development. Simply moving teeth without correcting these habits may not be enough.
Can the exercises be done at home?
Yes. Most of myofunctional therapy consists of short daily exercises performed at home under clinician guidance.
Is it more effective for growing children?
During growth, bone tissue is still forming, so treatment is faster and more lasting; however, it can also be applied in adults.
